Mark D. Bogen is a Democratic Broward County Commissioner representing District 2βcovering Coconut Creek, Margate, and parts of Pompano Beach, Deerfield Beach, and Coral Springsβand currently serves as the Broward County Mayor after a unanimous vote by his peers. He stands as a veteran leader on the commission, having been first elected in late 2014 and sworn into office in January 2015, rather than 2018. Alongside his political duties, Bogen has practiced law for over 30 years as the managing partner of the Bogen Law Group, concentrating heavily on condominium and homeowner association law, as well as high-profile consumer and antitrust class action lawsuits. He holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Illinois (1980) and a Juris Doctor from the Loyola University Chicago School of Law (1983), rather than a generic South Florida law degree. Before his county service, he worked as a Special Assistant to the State Attorney's Office, taught business law as an adjunct professor at Florida Atlantic University, and authored a long-running legal advice column for the Sun-Sentinel. On the commission, he previously served a full term as county mayor from 2018 to 2019 and has championed district-wide initiatives including the Broward College Bridge Scholarship program, regulating rideshare companies, securing funding for the families of fallen first responders, and famously eliminating postage fees on local absentee mail-in ballots.
The Broward County Commission is the legislative and governing body of Broward County, Florida, consisting of nine members representing individual districts. Commissioners set county policy, approve the annual budget (over $6 billion), enact ordinances, and oversee county services including transportation, water and wastewater, parks, and public safety. The District 2 Commissioner represents communities in northern Broward County.
