Wayne M. Messam

Wayne M. Messam is the Mayor of the City of Miramar, Florida, a Democrat who was first elected Mayor in 2015 and is currently serving his third term in that office. Prior to becoming Mayor, he served on the Miramar City Commission beginning in 2011, and has also worked as a businessman and construction company owner in South Florida. He earned a full athletic scholarship to Florida State University, where he excelled both academically and athletically. Messam made history in 2015 by defeating a 16-year incumbent to become the first Black Mayor elected in the City of Miramar, and has served as past President of the Florida League of Mayors and as a National Trustee of the African-American Mayors Association. A first-generation American born to Jamaican parents and raised in South Bay, Florida, he has been a prominent advocate for infrastructure investment, public safety, and economic development in Miramar.
