Michael "Mike" HernΓ‘ndez serves as Vice Mayor and District 4 Commissioner for the City of Pembroke Pines, a nonpartisan elected office to which he was first appointed in May 2024, won a special election in November 2024, and was most recently re-elected to a full four-year term on March 10, 2026. Born in Miami to Cuban American parents, HernΓ‘ndez is a graduate of Westminster Christian High School and Florida International University (FIU), where he completed a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and a Master's in Public Administration. Outside of elected office, he has built a prominent career in communications and public affairs, notably serving as the primary on-air political analyst for WTVJ NBC 6 and WSCV Telemundo 51 from 2019 to 2024. He currently serves as the Vice President of Communications for the Partnership for Miami. On the City Commission, HernΓ‘ndez represents the west side of the city and has championed key regional initiatives, including fully funding police school resource officers, establishing the city's "autism-friendly" municipal designation, and leading opposition to utility rate increases. To coordinate with proposed city charter changes regarding election cycles, fellow commissioners officially extended his Vice Mayor designation through January 2027. He continues to focus on municipal transparency, public safety, and long-term infrastructure planning for the Pembroke Pines community.
The Vice Mayor of Pembroke Pines is a leadership designation within the city's commission-based municipal government, serving at the city level. The Vice Mayor presides over commission meetings in the Mayor's absence and carries the same legislative and policy-making responsibilities as a City Commissioner, including voting on ordinances, resolutions, and the city budget.
