Rhonda A. Anderson serves as the Vice Mayor and Group II representative on the Coral Gables City Commission, a nonpartisan elected office she has held since her appointment as Vice Mayor in May 2023. She was first elected to the City Commission in April 2021 and won a consecutive four-year term in April 2025 with 58.24% of the vote. Prior to her commission service, she built a distinguished legal career spanning nearly four decades as a civil and criminal trial, mediation, and appellate attorney, establishing her private practice, Rhonda A. Anderson, P.A., in 1987, and representing clients before the U.S. and Florida Supreme Courts. A longtime resident who moved to the city in 1987, she raised her two daughters locally and holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Miami and a Juris Doctor from the Nova Southeastern University School of Law. Her extensive civic involvement includes positions with the Junior League of Miami and the Coral Gables Garden Club. On the commission, Vice Mayor Anderson has championed resident-first transparency, working to curb overdevelopment, protect neighborhood charm, and enhance public safety infrastructure. Following a voter-approved city charter referendum on April 21, 2026, which synchronized city contests with national even-year elections, her term was shortened by five months and will run continuously through November 2028.
The Vice Mayor of Coral Gables is a leadership designation within the City Commission, the legislative branch of this Miami-Dade County municipality. The role carries the standard powers of a City Commissioner โ€” including voting on ordinances, resolutions, and the municipal budget โ€” while also serving as acting Mayor in the Mayor's absence.
