Ariel Fernandez serves as the Group V Commissioner on the Coral Gables City Commission, a nonpartisan municipal office to which he was elected on April 11, 2023, by securing 52.3% of the vote against challenger Alex Bucelo. Prior to his election, Fernandez built a prominent local profile as the founder and editor of Gables Insider, a community news platform focused on Coral Gables affairs, which followed a deep career in public service that began as an intern for then-Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. He later served as a Senior Congressional District Aide, a Legislative Assistant to the Miami-Dade County Commission, and Chief of Staff to the Chairman of the Miami-Dade County School Board. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a minor in International Relations from Florida International University and is a graduate of Belen Jesuit Preparatory School. On the commission, Fernandez has built a staunch resident-first identity, frequently partnering with Commissioner Melissa Castro to challenge the mayoral voting bloc on matters of overdevelopment and fiscal transparency. Following a voter-approved city charter referendum on April 21, 2026, his initial term was shortened by five months, placing his Group V seat on the ballot for the upcoming November 3, 2026 municipal election cycle.
The City Commissioner is a member of the City of Coral Gables City Commission, the legislative and governing body of this municipal government in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Commissioners are responsible for setting city policy, adopting the municipal budget, enacting local ordinances, and providing oversight of city operations and services.
