Kionne L. McGhee (born November 23, 1977) is the Miami-Dade County Commissioner for District 9 and current Vice Chairman of the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners, unanimously elected to that role in November 2024. Born in Miami and raised in South Dade public housing, he overcame significant early challenges — labeled "emotionally handicapped" at age six with a 78 IQ assessment — to earn a B.A. in Political Science from Howard University and a J.D. from Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University. He served as an Assistant State Attorney in Miami-Dade County before entering politics. He served in the Florida House of Representatives from 2012 to 2020 representing South-Central Miami-Dade County, and served as House Minority Leader from 2018 to 2020. He was term-limited from the House and elected to the Miami-Dade County Commission in 2020. He is the author of the bestselling book "Conquering Hope: The Life You Were Destined to Live" and founder of Y.A.L.E. (Young Advocates Leading by Example). He serves as Chairman of the Miami-Dade Zoo Oversight Board and Chairman of the Miami-Dade Military Affairs Board. District 9 covers the southernmost portions of Miami-Dade County including Cutler Bay, Palmetto Bay, Homestead, Florida City, Naranja, Princeton, and unincorporated South Dade communities.
Miami-Dade County Commissioners represent one of 13 districts and serve four-year terms. Commissioner McGhee currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners — the second-highest position on the board, next in line to serve as Chair. He chairs the Miami-Dade Zoo Oversight Board and the Military Affairs Board, and serves on multiple county committees. His district covers the southernmost portions of Miami-Dade including Cutler Bay, Homestead, Florida City, and surrounding South Dade communities. McGhee has focused on transit expansion to South Dade, gun violence prevention, affordable housing, and economic opportunity for underserved communities.
