Avril Cherasard

Avril Cherasard serves as Commissioner for Seat 3 on the Miramar City Commission, a nonpartisan office to which she was elected on March 11, 2025, becoming the city's first female Bahamian-American commissioner. Before entering elected office, she worked as a civil servant with the Florida Department of Health and the Social Security Administration, where she advocated on behalf of individuals seeking public services. She earned a Bachelor's degree from Florida Memorial University, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 2001 after arriving in the United States at age 16 on an academic scholarship, and later completed a Master's degree in Public Administration from Nova Southeastern University. In the March 2025 election, she received 53.5% of votes cast in a three-way race, defeating Keith Walcott and Nari Tomlinson. She was subsequently honored in Exuma, Bahamas, in June 2025 in recognition of her historic achievement.

The Miramar City Commission is the governing legislative body of the City of Miramar, a municipal government in Broward County, Florida. Commissioners are responsible for setting city policy, adopting the municipal budget, enacting local ordinances, and providing oversight of city operations and services.
