Christine King was born in Guyana and moved to Miami at age five. She earned her Juris Doctor Degree from Nova Southeastern University and became a practicing attorney. Before entering elected office, she served as Chief of Constituent Services for a Miami-Dade County Commissioner, as an executive with the Community Action Agency (CAA), and as President and CEO of the Martin Luther King Economic Development Corporation. In November 2021, she became the first Guyanese American elected to the City of Miami Commission and the first woman to serve as Chairwoman of the Commission. Her district encompasses Liberty City, Little Haiti, Model City, Overtown, Wynwood/Edgewater, and the Upper East Side.
The City of Miami Commission is the legislative body of the city, responsible for enacting ordinances, adopting the annual budget, and setting policy direction.
