Fighting for Permanent Daylight Saving Time Through Discharge Petitions
Government Reform
◐ Partial
The Promise
"Americans should never again face the outdated ritual of turning back the clocks to standard time. As a strong advocate for permanent Daylight Saving Time, I've led efforts in the Florida legislature to keep our extra sunshine year-round. In Congress, I'm pleased to co-sponsor the Sunshine Protection Act, and I remain committed to making this common-sense change for the benefit of all Americans. It's time to make permanent Daylight Saving Time a reality."

Steube filed Discharge Petition No. 19 in the 118th Congress to force a floor vote on H.R. 1279, the Sunshine Protection Act, which would have made daylight saving time permanent nationwide. That effort did not result in enactment. In the 119th Congress, Steube introduced a new bill, H.R. 7378 (the Daylight Act of 2026, introduced February 4, 2026), which takes a different approach: abolishing DST and permanently shifting clocks forward 30 minutes from current standard time rather than adopting full permanent DST. He then filed Discharge Petition No. 20 on April 29, 2026, to discharge the Committee on Rules from consideration of H.Res. 1055, which would provide for floor consideration of H.R. 7378. As of May 28, 2026, neither bill has been signed into law, though Steube has demonstrated sustained and evolving legislative effort across two Congresses.

The Record
Steube filed Discharge Petition No. 11 in the 118th Congress on April 30, 2024 to force a House floor vote on H.R. 5863, the Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act. The petition reached the required 218 signatures on May 15, 2024 — only the third successful public discharge petition in congressional history — compelling a floor vote. The full House passed the bill on May 21, 2024 with sweeping bipartisan support (382-7). The Senate passed the bill on December 4, 2024 by voice vote, and President Biden signed it into law in December 2024. The enacted law allows Americans to claim disaster-related personal casualty losses without itemizing deductions and eliminates the 10% AGI threshold, covering disasters including Hurricanes Ian, Idalia, Nicole, Debby, Helene, and Milton. In the 119th Congress, Steube introduced follow-on legislation (H.R. 5366, the Doug LaMalfa Federal Disaster Tax Relief Certainty Act) to extend these protections through 2026, which has advanced through the Ways and Means Committee.

Eliminating DEI Programs from the U.S. Military
Government Reform
◐ Partial
The Promise
"The military's sole focus should be on the safety and security of the American people, but under the Biden administration, our nation's military has become engulfed in left wing propaganda. These so-called DEI programs are harming the recruitment and retention of military personnel. My legislation ensures these divisive and racist activities are eliminated from our nation's military."

The Record
Steube introduced H.R. 3273, the Eliminate DEI in the Military Act, on May 11, 2023 in the 118th Congress, prohibiting federal funds from being used for any DEI activity in the armed forces, service academies, or at the Department of Defense. The bill was referred to committee and did not advance to enactment. Steube reintroduced the legislation in the 119th Congress as H.R. 461 on January 15, 2025; it was again referred to the Committee on Armed Services and has not advanced beyond committee as of May 28, 2026. However, the core policy goal Steube championed was substantially achieved through executive action: President Trump signed an executive order on January 20, 2025 directing termination of DEI programs across the federal government including the military, and a second order on January 27, 2025 ('Restoring America's Fighting Force') explicitly directed abolishment of every DEI office within the Department of Defense. Steube's standalone bill has not been enacted, but the policy outcome he sought has been realized through the executive branch.

Supporting Military Readiness and Defense Investment

The Promise
"I am honored to bring my military experience to Congress as we draft and debate crucial legislation to set sound defense policy and provide our service members with the resources they need. Peace, prosperity and democracy at home and abroad are made possible by our continued investment in our national defense."

The Record
Steube serves on the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence in the 119th Congress, a role directly relevant to national security oversight. In September 2025, the House passed six amendments Steube introduced to H.R. 3838, the FY2026 NDAA, covering topics including congressional briefings on military aircraft deliveries to Israel, reports on U.S.-Israel defense cooperation, and expanded Iran military reporting — demonstrating active engagement on defense policy. However, Steube voted against the final enacted FY2026 NDAA (P.L. 119-60, signed December 18, 2025, passed 312-112) despite the bill containing a 3.8% pay raise for all service members. Before the vote, Steube told Fox News Digital he was frustrated with the closed-door process: "We're getting shoved, and we just have to eat it, or vote against increasing pay to our military service members. It's a very unfortunate situation." He voted against it anyway — directly contradicting his stated commitment to providing service members with the resources they need. His objections centered on the removal of DEI-in-the-military provisions and closed-door negotiations rather than opposition to defense spending itself, but the outcome was a no-vote on the primary vehicle for military investment he had promised to support. No specific defense-readiness legislation he authored has been enacted into law as of May 2026.

Honoring the Taxpayer Protection Pledge Against Tax Increases

The Promise
"My first priority is extending President Trump's tax cuts. Americans are struggling with rising costs and we need to get our economy back on track. I will not support any effort to raise taxes on hardworking American families or small businesses."

The Record
Steube signed the Americans for Tax Reform Taxpayer Protection Pledge and has maintained a voting record consistent with opposing tax increases throughout his tenure. In the 119th Congress, he serves on the House Committee on Ways and Means, the chief tax-writing committee, placing him in a direct legislative role over tax policy. He has publicly advocated for making the 2017 Trump tax cuts permanent, authoring an op-ed in the Sarasota Herald-Tribune to that effect. He introduced H.R. 320, the Make Marriage Great Again Act of 2025, to eliminate the marriage tax penalty in income tax rate brackets. His disaster tax relief legislation (H.R. 5863, enacted December 2024) and follow-on H.R. 5366 also align with the pledge's anti-burden posture by reducing tax liability for disaster victims. No documented instance of Steube voting for a net tax increase or net reduction in tax deductions has been identified as of May 28, 2026.
