Born and raised in Miami-Dade County. Graduate Magna Cum Laude in English Education from Florida A&M University โ€” the first of his six siblings to graduate from college. Earned a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership and a Doctorate in Educational Administration and Supervision both from Florida International University. Participated in postdoctoral leadership institutes on School Reform and Management at Harvard and Stanford Universities. Lifelong educator who began as a classroom teacher at elementary middle and senior high school levels. Rose through the ranks to become assistant principal elementary school principal and high school principal at Miami Northwestern High School. In 2008 became the first Black administrator to come through the ranks of Miami-Dade County Public Schools and rise to the level of Superintendent when selected unanimously via a nationwide search to become Superintendent of Schools in New Jersey. First elected to the Miami-Dade School Board District 1 in November 2016. Re-elected unopposed in 2020 and again in 2024. Current term ends November 2028. 25-year resident of Miami Gardens. Author of three published books on education. Member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church of Miami Gardens.
Miami-Dade County School Board members represent their district on the nine-member board that governs Miami-Dade County Public Schools โ€” the fourth largest school district in the United States serving over 335,000 students across 537 schools with an annual budget of approximately $4 billion. Board members set district policy, approve the budget, hire and evaluate the superintendent, and vote on curriculum and school safety matters. District 1 covers Miami Gardens, Opa-locka, Miami Lakes, and surrounding North Miami-Dade communities. Members serve four-year terms. Annual salary: $43,212.
